No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
